WHAT’S GOING ON IN MALLORCA THAT SUDDENLY?

… IT’S LIKE HOLLYWOOD!

From the pioneers Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, back in the eighties, to the most recent move of director Ruben Östlund, there are many actors and filmmakers who choose Mallorca to live. The island has become a pole of attraction and refuge for businessmen, socialites and, in recent times, many internationally famous actors.

The first time I read about the imminent opening of Psycho De Lux it caught my attention so much that I wanted to see which actors live in Mallorca!

German actor Til Schweiger,, owner since 2011 of a house in the Establiments area. British actor Joseph Fiennes, star of the first seasons of the series The Handmaid’s Tale. Together with his wife, Dolores Diéguez, they regularly attend events such as La Nit del Art, which is held in museums and art galleries in the city in September, summer tennis tournaments or the Atlántida Films Festival, directed by the co-founder of the Filmin platform, Jaume Ripoll, which takes place in August and is usually also attended by Queen Letizia.

Spanish-German actor Daniel Brühl chose a village in the north of the island to live with his wife and children a few years ago.

One of the latest to move in has been director Ruben Östlund, a Swedish filmmaker who this year is competing for three Oscars with his film The Triangle of Sadness. The director, who already won the Palme d’Or this year at the Cannes Film Festival, presented his film at Palma’s Teatro Principal as part of the Mallorca Evolution Film Festival. Östlund has shown his intention to shoot his next film on the island.

The latest to join the list of actors who choose the island has been Amber Heard, who last summer sought tranquility in Costitx, a small town of 13,000 inhabitants located in the center of Mallorca.

The actress who has also recently visited Mallorca has been Nicole Kidman, who is currently filming the series Lioness with Zoe Saldaña. In a series of photographs published on her Instagram profile, the Australian made clear her feelings with a brief “Loving Mallorca”. The interpreter attended a few years ago to the screening and subsequent colloquium on the film Shakespeare in Love, which was then celebrating its 15th anniversary and starred alongside Gwyneth Paltrow. With his presence he wanted to show his support to Cineciutat, a screening room in the Balearic capital that works thanks to the funds provided by its members.

Ben Jakober and Yannick Vu, founders of the original Sa Bassa Blanca museum.

Claudia Schiffer & Matthew Vaughn. …

Annie Lenox. …

And now, beyond having a home on Mallorca, Hollywood is setting a definitive foot on the island with Psycho De Lux Media, the new production company based on the island that brings together the experience of reputable Hollywood producers.

Its union with A Bigger Boat is more financial and creative, as this Californian company has Peter Block, former president of acquisitions and co-productions at Lions Gate, and Cory Neal, his partner. The combined experience of all of them, according to the announcement, adds up to billions of dollars generated.

PsychoDelux Media is a media company focused on film, television and multimedia development, production and its ancillary alternative production and distribution services activities. As the entertainment industry evolves in Spain, Europe and worldwide, Psycodelux is poised to capture all aspects of genres, immersive with budget conscious levels for both theatrical and streaming Film and Television.

March 2021 Spain announced a public investment of €1.6 billion until 2025, the Audio Visual` Hub of Spain has been working in four key areas: attracting foreign investment and filming; improving financial and fiscal instruments; training talent, with a special focus on women; and implementing regulatory reforms and removing administrative barriers.

Psycho De Lux are, in turn, people with reputable experience in the world of film, television and entertainment. One of them is producer and screenwriter Joe Q. Bretz, a Wisconsin native who has been living on the Island for several years with his wife, model Lisa Charlott, who is also part of the team. His partner, Brent Whitney, an entrepreneur and technology investor, has made significant contributions in the media.

In addition, producer and screenwriter John Schneider, brother of well-known actor and comedian Rob Schneider, Peter Block and Cory Neal of production company A Bigger Boat, and former Metro Goldwyn Meyer national television president John Bryan, also join the project along with other important professionals such as the Sevillian artist Markos Keyto, who has worked on a multitude of film projects as art director, costume and production design, and the Mallorcan creative director Jorge Aleix, who holds a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona. Bretz is, precisely, the creator of the series to be shot in Mallorca on a private estate with actor David Arquette, who will join other well-known American and European faces who are in negotiations and will be involved in both casting and directing.

On the fact of filming in Mallorca, Schneider praised the island, which he describes as “a place with an incredible climate and mountains, beautiful cities and towns that is also very well connected” with the rest of the world.

Bretz expressed himself in the same line for this newspaper, who speaks of Mallorca as “an emerging San Francisco or Silicon Valley”, to which he adds the governmental impulse to announce a plan of 1.6 billion euros to boost film production in the country until 2025, of which they believe Mallorca can be an epicenter.

Pedro Barbadillo, director of the Mallorca Film Commission, has already met several times with the people of Psycho De Lux Media and has expressed his assessment of these projects coming to the island: “These are solvent people, very interested and committed, who also have access to powerful people with the ability to bring high-level talent”. At the same time, the project they manage “will create jobs”.

So it is not surprising that with this platform, we will see more and more actors in this paradise!
