We love the exhibition “Eivissa als anys setanta: pagesos i hippies” by Josep Soler!

Soler came to Ibiza in the early 1970s on a trip organised by the Agrupació Fotogràfica de Catalunya. “He came across a landscape, characters and customs that impacted him straight away. He photographed everything he could on that occasion and returned again to Ibiza determined to portray what he had discovered.

The strong contrast between the traditional Ibizan culture and the hippies who were beginning to have a strong presence, both in the city and in other towns on the island, captured his interest.

This can be seen in the collection of photographs in which one can recognise the streets of Vila full of ‘peluts’ selling their handicrafts in, for example, the parade ground of Dalt Vila or in the then emerging flea market of Punta Arabí.

Photos of naked people on the beach of Es Figueral or bearded hippies, with their piercings and tattoos that so scandalised the less accustomed gazes of the time.

This exhibition also shows pictures of characters now lost in time, such as the photographs of peasant women, which also occupy a large part of the exhibition.

Another theme that Soler immortalised is the architectural heritage that Soler discovered on his trips to Ibiza: and island of culture, tradition and hippies!

Sa Nostra Room presents the exhibition Eivissa als anys setanta: pagesos i hippies(‘Ibiza in the seventies: peasants and hippies’), a compilation of more than 200 images by the Catalan photographer. A fascinating exhibition that allows us to travel to that longed-for Ibiza and which opens on Thursday 20 of April of 2023 and can be visited until next 2 June in time Monday to Friday.
