hope your road is a long one,<\/p>\n

full of adventure, full of discovery.<\/p>\n

Laistrygonians, Cyclops,<\/p>\n

angry Poseidon\u2014don\u2019t be afraid of them:<\/p>\n

you\u2019ll never find things like that on your way<\/p>\n

as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,<\/p>\n

as long as a rare excitement<\/p>\n

stirs your spirit and your body.<\/p>\n

Laistrygonians, Cyclops,<\/p>\n

wild Poseidon\u2014you won\u2019t encounter them<\/p>\n

unless you bring them along inside your soul,<\/p>\n

unless your soul sets them up in front of you.<\/p>\n

Hope your road is a long one.<\/p>\n

May there be many summer mornings when,<\/p>\n

with what pleasure, what joy,<\/p>\n

you enter harbors you\u2019re seeing for the first time;<\/p>\n

may you stop at Phoenician trading stations<\/p>\n

to buy fine things,<\/p>\n

mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,<\/p>\n

sensual perfume of every kind\u2014<\/p>\n

as many sensual perfumes as you can;<\/p>\n

and may you visit many Egyptian cities<\/p>\n

to learn and go on learning from their scholars.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.<\/p>\n

Arriving there is what you\u2019re destined for.<\/p>\n

But don\u2019t hurry the journey at all.<\/p>\n

Better if it lasts for years,<\/p>\n

so you\u2019re old by the time you reach the island,<\/p>\n

wealthy with all you\u2019ve gained on the way,<\/p>\n

not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.<\/p>\n

Without her you wouldn’t have set out.<\/p>\n

She has nothing left to give you now.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And if you find her poor, Ithaka won\u2019t have fooled you.<\/p>\n

Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,<\/p>\n

you\u2019ll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.<\/p>\n
